Space Junk

Recently I viewed a TV program discussing the threat posed by space debris, to orbiting satellites and populated spacecraft.

“In 2025, the European Space Agency’s Space Environment statistics reported 40230 artificial objects in orbit above the Earth regularly tracked by Space Surveillance Networks and maintained in their catalogue. This refers only to objects large enough to be tracked and in an orbit that makes tracking possible.’

‘As of January 2019, more than 128 million pieces of debris smaller than 1 cm, about 900,000 pieces of debris 1–10 cm, and around 34,000 of pieces larger than 10 cm were estimated to be in orbit around the Earth’ (Wikipedia). Despite their size, such small pieces can cause an enormous amount of damage.

The cartoonish nature of the image below is not in anyway intended to bely the serious problem posed by space junk.

Inspired by Monet’s wonderful artworks of gardens and water features, I have attempted to create moonlight over a lily pond.

The Old Holiday Film and Slide Night Trick

Maybe you’re too young, but I certainly remember ‘slide nights’ when endless numbers of holiday photos, short movies (8mm) and slides would be shown to very patient family members and friends. And I am having a laugh at myself here for my long winded, multi-image blogs and ‘scribble’ post.

To Build a House

Constructions and existing structures are subjects I gravitate towards when looking for visual inspiration and in this context I feel the freedom to leave reality behind.

Sitting on the Fence

At a time when truth is difficult to distinguish from lies and it’s difficult to know who to trust ….. I find myself sitting on the proverbial fence quite often. But it can be an uncomfortable and isolating place to be.

I love cityscapes, so I thought I’d try my hand at creating one.

We Are One

Three main factors came together to make this image. One, a long term belief of mine that we are somehow all connected. Two is a scientific theory called Cosmic or Quantum Entanglement and the third is the influence of an artist whose name and work I discovered online about a month ago, but can no longer find (whoops, I forgot to takes notes).

In relation to Cosmic Entanglement – “Light from ancient quasars helped confirm quantum entanglement ……. physicists at MIT, the University of Vienna provided strong support for quantum entanglement, the seemingly far-out idea that two particles, no matter how distant from each other in space and time, can be inextricably linked, in a way that defies the rules of classical physics.” Jennifer Chu | MIT News Office, August 19 2018

Intersections

From start to finish this image has been an exercise in trying to resolve all of the interconnections and still arrive at a pleasing image …. I’m not certain I’ve succeeded.

Recently I viewed a short video of a giraffe warding off a lion and I wished I could capture and present the strength and majesty displayed by the giraffe in that situation. Sadly I couldn’t achieve that, but hopefully, with the few lines and colour in this simplistic, childlike, ‘Naive style” image, I’ve captured something of the essence of a giraffe.

Escalators

Maybe it’s the repetitive nature of these moving platforms that got me interested. Or was it the diagonal lines created by sets of these machines as they span one or more floors? Or could it have been the precision by which they function?
