In late February and early March the Australian east coast was battered by a low pressure system, dumping unprecedented amounts of rain. In some places a years worth of rain fell in one day. Flooding was widespread. Tuggerah Lake rose by 1.34 meters, which is classed as a moderate flood level for this low lying area. While the flood water encroached into our back yard, it thankfully didn’t reach our house. But there were warnings the lake may rise further.

So the 2022 trip to our Paradise near the Murrumbidgee River was in doubt for us. Fortunately a few days before our departure date the flood waters receded and the ground around us started to dry out.

However, there was also some concern about access to our hidden valley beside the river. We all questioned, “Were the dirt roads into the valley damaged by rain?” “Was the river too high to allow for camping?” Again we were fortunate. While the river level was high, it did not pose a problem for camping. And only a normal amount of rain had fallen in the area, so the roads were no worse than usual.

In Praise of Caravans

Some people like to camp in tents while others prefer camper trailers or Motor homes etc., etc,.. Our caravan is our home away from home, providing a comfortable bed, good refrigeration, storage to keep food and clothing dry, running hot water, a shower, a toilet and safety from most storm activity.

What a privilege to visit this place of solitude, away from the devastating situation in Ukraine, the economic and political challenges with China and the messy state of Australian politics in the lead up to the 2022 Federal election.

The weather was good despite the cloud cover, which complimented the sun’s and moon’s light in the sky and on the hills.

Well, our time in Paradise has come to an end once again. I hope I’ve conveyed how special our slice of paradise really is.
